From Savings to Salon – Mo’s Story

Reading Time: 3 minutes

What could joining a credit union do for you?

From building savings for that extra bit of security, to the option of loans, we’re here to improve the financial wellbeing of the people of South & Central Manchester.

Mo has been involved with credit unions since she was 16, and a member of South Manchester Credit Union for 10 years.

South Manchester Credit Union has enabled her to reach her goals!

Finding comfort in credit unions

Mo joined Fallowfield Credit Union when she was 16 and remembers going to deposit at her local church.

After deciding she wanted to learn to drive and eventually buy a car, she went to a bank to enquire about a loan. She ended up walking straight back out.

“I felt a little bit intimidated; I felt like because I wanted a loan that it was like oh she hasn’t got much money”

From this point she decided to stick to credit unions.

“I don’t think I’d ever want to go back into a bank”

Saving to reach your goals

Mo has built great saving habits during her time as a credit union member.

Having savings provides you with peace of mind, as well as opportunity to do things you may not have been able to do otherwise. For Mo this meant she was able to open her very own home hair salon.

“Begin with £5 per week then see how you feel, if you don’t feel like it’s a big chunk out of your day-to-day life then increase it to £10 and see how you get on.”

Opening a home hair salon

After being in the hairdressing industry for over 20 years, Mo decided she wanted to convert her summer house into a garden salon so that she could take on her own clients.

Mo had built enough savings with us to do this, however she instead opted for our Secured Loan. This meant her savings were safe and secure and she could get a loan and repay it in manageable instalments.

“Without the credit union I don’t think I’d have any of it.

The application process is enjoyable and simple; it just runs so smoothly.”

Why South Manchester Credit Union?

Mo chooses a credit union for her financial needs. She likes the community aspect, the individuality of our services and the friendly feeling.

“It’s just totally different. The staff are friendly, a bit more laid back and I feel as though they are the same as me even though they work there.”

She has even gotten her 13-year-old son involved by opening him a Young Saver account.

By doing this she gave him a kickstart towards his future. His money will go towards important milestones like driving lessons, university and even school trips.

“He won’t be taking his savings out, he will be helping the community as well.

We have chatted about it, so he understands how it all works.”
